Dans un gant de fer et La joue droite n’ont rien perdu de leur force, au contraire, depuis le mouvement féministe et le développement de la littérature personnelle. Néo-classique dans ses romans et nouvelles (langue, psychologie, mondanité, ironie), Claire Martin le demeure dans ces récits autobiographiques. Mais, par sa critique sociale et sa valeur historique, ce diptyque de mémoires sur l’Entre-deux-guerres en banlieue de Québec s’inscrit dans le droit fil des essais et manifestes de la Révolution tranquille. La mise au jeu et en jeu — en joue— se fait entre lui, le Père autoritaire sans autorité, et « je », la petite fille révoltée, armée par les livres, les mots, une écriture limpide, un sens du théâtre remarquable.
