Abstract
En 1847, moins de 10 ans après les rébellions des Patriotes et la réplique de Londres, l’Acte d’Union, un groupe de jeunes décide de fonder le journal L’Avenir afin de faire entendre la voix de la jeunesse sur toutes les questions d’intérêt public. D’abord mesuré, ce journal se lancera bientôt tête baissée dans les débats politiques et prendra résolument position pour Louis-Joseph Papineau, qui exige la dissolution de l’Union. Tout en proclamant avec ferveur des opinions politiques qualifiées de radicales, les journalistes de L’Avenir affirmeront le caractère indépendant et impartial de leur feuille. Ils emprunteront partiellement le modèle d’un nouveau type de journal populaire américain, le penny press, détaché des sources de financement politiques des journaux d’opinion. Dans quelle mesure les journalistes de L’Avenir sont-ils parvenus à concilier les mandats en apparence contradictoires de journal engagé mais impartial et indépendant? Et comment comprenait-on ces notions d’impartialité et d’indépendance dans le contexte du journal d’opinion du xix e siècle?
