Abstract
Evoking Jean Genet’s phrase entre chien et loup, connoting transformation, bestiality and the slippage of identity as well as the distinction between politics and aesthetics, this essay engages with Marlene van Niekerk’s novel Triomf (1994) as a text that poses timely and provocative questions about the “place of the human” in post‐apartheid South Africa.
