Abstract
L'étude du monde rural québécois pendant la première moitié du XIXe siècle se heurte à de nombreux obstacles, notamment l'absence d'outils cartographiques de base illustrant la géographie concrète des campagnes et la difficulté à discerner l'habitant de la population rurale non agricole. Aux images classiques d'une société entièrement vouée à l'agriculture et vivant repliée sur elle-même, des études détaillées du territoire seigneurial permettent d'opposer celle d'un monde beaucoup diversifié, marqué par la croissance villageoise et par la montée d'une économie de marché, que sanctionne un foisonnement sans précédent d'industries rurales. À côté des aires où l'économie de marché ne permet que la consolidation des genres de vie traditionnels, il s'en profile d'autres, où émergent de véritables îlots de modernité. Jusqu'aux années 1850, le Québec semble se comporter comme les autres pays développés de l'économie-monde nord-atlantique.
