Abstract
Depuis plusieurs décennies, des pesticides sont utilisés afin d’augmenter la production agricole ainsi que pour éradiquer des maladies tropicales. Au fil des ans, plusieurs effets toxiques menaçant la santé ont été identifiés, et aujourd’hui il est reconnu que l’exposition peut endommager plusieurs systèmes biologiques.Cet article a pour but d’analyser les taux élevés de suicide dans certaines régions rurales au Brésil, à la lumière des hypothèses alternatives tentant d’expliquer de tels taux, en particulier l’exposition aux pesticides. À partir d’une approche écosystémique, on discute également les facteurs politiques, économiques, et culturels jouant un rôle dans cette problématique. Enfin, on présente une réflexion au sujet des répercussions du problème pour la santé publique au Brésil. La synthèse des connaissances montre un nombre raisonnable d’évidences supportant l’hypothèse d’un possible lien entre l’exposition aux pesticides et la survenue de suicides au Brésil, notamment dans l’agriculture familiale au sud du pays, et ce par l’entremise des troubles de l’humeur causés par de tels poisons.
