Abstract
The history of rapid advancement in all fields of education in Turkey during the last quarter of a century is a record of achievement of which the nation may be justly proud. The new Turkish Republic has been focussing its attention on physical as well as intellectual education, which it regards as the foundation stone of social well-being. The fundamental principles governing the education system are its secular nature, its democratic-nationalistic character (rendering it freely and equally available to all citizens of both sexes), and its centralization under the Ministry of Education, which controls and supervises a uniform programme of studies for all the schools in the country.
