Abstract
La contribution de Fernand Dumont à la sociologie du catholicisme québécois se caractérise par l'exploration de la mémoire de la société québécoise qui s'est définie « en tant que » société religieuse et par l'ouverture sur l'avenir et le devenir du catholicisme. Les catégories à partir desquelles Dumont a pensé le catholicisme québécois sont mises en valeur dans cet article, et nous montrons leur fécondité pour penser la situation actuelle. Il s'avère ainsi possible de poursuivre son questionnement qui n'a rien perdu de son acuité : à partir de quels paramètres peut se définir l'identité du chrétien ? comment penser la relation de la foi et de la culture ? quel est le statut du transcendant dans la culture ? quelle peut être la place du catholicisme dans l'espace public contemporain ?
