Faute d’un véritable travail de définition, comparable à celui dont ont été l’objet les sports, les jeux dits conventionnels demeurent un objet aux limites apparemment consensuelles, mais en réalité particuliérement floues. Cette incertitude, liée à une absence de véritable remise en question des présupposés des définitions fondatrices de Huizinga et Caillois, ne permet pas à proprement parler une appropriation des jeux par les sciences sociales, en vue de l’étude des innombrables modalités de leur pratique. Pour y remédier, on proposera, à partir d’une relecture critique des ouvrages classiques sur le jeu, une définition d’autant plus restrictive qu’elle se veut rigoureuse, ainsi qu’une réflexion sur l’arbitraire poussant à distinguer les sports des autres jeux, tout en ignorant d’autres lignes de démarcation tout aussi cruciales et porteuses.
