Abstract
La littérature haïtienne du xixe siècle a été largement négligée par les critiques. Même Stella, publié en 1859 et unanimement présenté par les historiens comme « le premier roman haïtien », a éveillé peu d’intérêt puisqu’on considère en général que c’est un roman historique plutôt amateur et ambigu. Cet article essaie de montrer que Stella est en fait un roman épique dans lequel Bergeaud « réinvente » les caractéristiques principales du récit épique afin de dresser un portrait de la révolution haïtienne de 1804. Ainsi, Bergeaud crée un texte « hybride », principalement défini par une poétique épique mais sans exclure la polyphonie et les éléments métadiscursifs qui, selon la critique littéraire contemporaine, font partie du roman moderne (sinon postmoderne). Du point de vue de la théorie littéraire actuelle, la littérature haïtienne semble ainsi avoir été une littérature très moderne dès le commencement.
