Abstract
Government statistics report that an increasing number of students are 'out of school'. The reasons for this trend are varied. Relevant data from one Education and Library Board in Northern Ireland is thoroughly examined. Following a quantitative analysis an ethnographic-type study is undertaken with a representative sample of excluded students. This approach has been found productive by researchers (Ruddock et ai, 1996). Semi-structured interviews reveal the student perspective and that of their home and school on issues surrounding school exclusion. The extensive findings are discussed in the light of recent research and recommendations for future action are presented.
