Abstract
Optic neuritis (ON) is an inflammatory optic nerve injury, which is strongly associated with multiple sclerosis (MS). Because ON patients often seek ophthalmic attention, eye care experts play a vital role in the diagnosis and initial treatment of this condition. It is important that clinicians be familiar with the presenting features of typical ON, and be able to identify ‘red flags’ that may herald an alternate diagnosis. Moreover, they should be able to discuss the association between typical ON and MS, and the appropriate management steps that should be taken to establish a patient’s risk for the latter condition. Eye care specialists can make unique contributions to the multi-disciplinary, team-based approach that is needed for management of ON and MS patients, and should be informed about evolving concepts and emerging therapy options in this field.
