Abstract
L’augustinisme est une culture de l’intériorité : les port-royalistes, à l’instar de leur maître saint Augustin, appellent l’homme pécheur à rentrer en lui-même. Ils représentent volontiers l’intériorité de façon figurée : tandis qu’une série d’images renvoie à la souillure que constitue le péché, d’autres sont chargées d’une connotation positive, évoquant le recueillement du pénitent. Mais si les auteurs port-royalistes s’accordent dans la représentation du coeur pécheur, ils divergent dans leur conception de la réparation de cette corruption : les uns, tel Saint-Cyran, se défient de l’esprit humain et de la réflexivité pour prôner l’abandon à Dieu, d’autres, tel Nicole, définissent une voie ascétique fondée sur le retour sur soi et la méditation. On voit ainsi s’opérer au sein même de Port-Royal un partage entre une voie mystique et une voie ascétique.
