Abstract
La tradition patriarcale divise le monde en deux sphères séparées, le masculin et le féminin, ce qui nie l’origine double de l’être humain. De plus, en mettant l’accent sur l’héritage qui passe de père en fils, cette tradition ignore l’importance de la filiation maternelle dans la vie de l’homme. La démarche du crabe interroge l’identité masculine patriarcale en mettant en avant l’origine double de l’être humain et l’importance, pour l’homme, de la filiation maternelle. Les personnages féminins du roman conduisent le protagoniste sur la trace de ses aïeules, à la redécouverte d’une composante identitaire refoulée — le féminin — et au rajustement de son identité. L’identité masculine devient alors une énigme qui contient des éléments multiples (présents, absents, masculins, féminins, refoulés, manifestés) et sur laquelle l’homme n’aura jamais une emprise totale.
