Abstract
This paper describes a mechanism explaining the nonrandom stacking of hexagonal close-packed layers found experimentally for face-centered-cubic crystals. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we demonstrate that it is a nonplanar growth mechanism (or roughening effects) on the [111] face that determines this behavior. Specifically, the fluctuations at the [111] interface, which are predominantly [111] microfaceted, give rise to islands of crystalline order, favoring cubic close-packed stacking (i.e., an $ABCABC$ rather than an $ABAB$ pattern). We find that the [001] and [011] faces also have a strong tendency to exhibit [111] microfacets, suggesting that all three principal faces share this common molecular characteristic.
