À une époque où l’on s’est efforcé de redéfinir la nature de la vie et de faire de l’âme ( anima ou psyché) une autorité centrale dans l’organisation de tout processus matériel et immatériel, l’architecture sert non seulement de métaphore structurelle, mais aussi de schéma épistémologique capable de recadrer la formation tectonique de tout être vivant. Cet article retrace les manifestations externes et les processus méthodologiques internes de cette « âme architectonique » à travers les théories épistémologiques du philosophe Albert Lemoine et sa lecture des principes vitalistes et animistes de Georg Ernst Stahl; également dans les récits ethnographiques des forêts animées écrits par des anthropologues comparatistes tels Edward Burnett Tylor et James George Frazer; ou encore dans les rudiments du culte animiste des arbres que l’on trouve dans les écrits d’historiens et théoriciens de l’architecture tels James Fergusson, Karl Bötticher et Gottfried Semper; ou enfin dans les mémoires ethnographiques sur les rituels animistes contemporains de l’historien culturel Aby Warburg.
