Abstract
Ce texte tente de mieux rendre compte de la fonction et de la signification d’une pratique de rituel d’ouverture dont la prière du maire Tremblay représente un cas anachronique et inconvenant, mais qui a tout lieu d’être inventé à neuf au profit de nos sociétés démocratiques libérales « sorties de la religion » et aveugles devant le fait de leur propre transcendance. Il détermine d’abord le genre littéraire de cette prière qui joue le rôle d’un rituel théiste d’ouverture d’une assemblée politique qui ne poserait sans doute aucun problème dans la tradition politique des États-Unis. Il montre, qu’aujourd’hui, cette pratique de la Ville de Saguenay a un effet sectaire d’exclusion qui contredit la raison d’être de l’institution publique. Paradoxalement, des arguments philosophiques et même théologiques à l’encontre de cette exclusion de participation à des institutions communes ont fondé tout le processus de déconfessionnalisation à l’œuvre au Québec depuis 1946 (Père Lévesque. O.P.). Mais plutôt que d’abolir tout rituel, ne conviendrait-il pas d’inventer de nouvelles manières d’exprimer la dimension symbolique du politique ?
