Au Québec, le phénomène des départs scolaires, légèrement plus accentué à l’école anglaise qu’à l’école française, touche environ 140 000 élèves du secondaire chaque année. Les départs de l’école secondaire française se font plus souvent sans diplôme et à un âge moyen légèrement plus élevé. La proportion de départs d’élèves diplômés tend à croître avec l’âge à l’école française ; parmi les départs de l’école anglaise, cette proportion atteint un maximum à 16-17 ans puis fléchit. Toutefois, en général, ces proportions à un àge donné augmentent avec les départs plus récents. Le phénomène du départ d’élèves non-diplômés conduit à la notion d’abandon scolaire ; on en observe, en moyenne, près de 44 000 par année, au cours de notre période d’observation. Les quotients d’abandons scolaires varient avec les cohortes : à l’école française, ils passent de 82 pour 1 000 en 1972-1973 à 59 pour 1 000 en 1977-1978; à l’école anglaise, ils passent de 60 pour 1 000 à 37 pour 1 000 au cours de la même période.
