Mis en place à la suite de l’épisode de pollution de janvier-février 1989, Erpurs est un programme qui a pour objectif l’évaluation des effets de la pollution atmosphérique urbaine sur la santé en Ile-de-France. L’ensemble des données de mortalité disponibles de 1987 à 1998 pour l’agglomération parisienne ont été analysées afin d’étudier les relations avec les niveaux de différents polluants. La méthode d'analyse utilisée consiste à mettre en relation les variations temporelles des niveaux de polluants avec celles du nombre journalier de décès. Il ressort de cette étude que, lorsque l'on passe d'un niveau faible de pollution (niveau non dépassé au cours des 18 jours les moins pollués de l'année) à un niveau médian de pollution (niveau atteint ou dépassé la moitié des jours de l'année), on observe des augmentations pouvant aller jusqu'à 4,7% pour la mortalité pour causes respiratoires, en rapport avec les particules fines.
