Abstract
Dans Adieu, Danièle Sallenave fait le portrait d’un vieil homme vu par son petit neveu, qui lui rend visite, l’interroge, le photographie un mois durant. Le récit se présente comme la chronique fragmentaire des conversations entre les deux hommes par le plus jeune, conversations émaillées d’anecdotes familiales, de biographèmes, de réparties parfois humoristiques, souvent sans intérêt. Comme le titre du récit l’indique, la disparition proche du vieil homme donne à la chronique une force d’émotion jamais exprimée, qui procure une valeur à ce qui, a priori, n’en a pas. Pourtant, la mélancolie sourde d’Adieu ne cède pas à la tentation d’ériger le minuscule en « monument ». Sallenave se garde bien de métamorphoser le vieil homme qui n’est « rien, ni personne » en légende. Le choix de fragmenter le récit, l’usage très poussé de la citation, la façon même de rapporter le contexte immédiat d’énonciation, tous ces procédés manifestent le souci de saisir l’insignifiant au ras de la conversation ordinaire, sans le mythifier. Entre la mélancolie de la trace et le présent d’une rencontre, entre la résistance au récit et l’insistance du récit, l’insignifiant relève, chez Sallenave, d’enjeux éthiques et poétiques qu’il s’agira d’examiner.
