Abstract
La visión tópica que se había ido creando sobre España después de 1492 se mantendrá entre los judíos sefardíes otomanos de finales del siglo XIX, a pesar de la llegada de la modernidad. Los sefardíes finiseculares parecen incapaces de cambiar esta imagen tópica porque su desaparición tendría repercusiones en la percepción de su propia identidad. El periodismo, uno de los nuevos géneros literarios adoptados por los sefardíes, refleja esos tópicos en las noticias de contenido histórico-cultural que se refieren a la España del momento. Un ejemplo de esta situación lo presentan las noticias publicadas con motivo del «desastre del 98» en el periódico salonicense El Avenir.
