Research in ocean remote sensing using radar has been ongoing at Memorial University, Newfoundland since about 1980. Using rough surface scattering models derived in-house for high frequency surface wave radars (HFSWR), inversion techniques were developed to extract various ocean surface parameters from the radar sea echo. Within the last few years this research has been expanded to include ocean parameter estimation using nautical radar. This paper provides a summary of the initiatives that have been undertaken over the last dozen years as well as those being addressed currently.
