Phase separation processes under mass conservation (Ostwald ripening) lead to a self-similar evolution of spatial order in the system. The current study addresses the origin of this partial order, distinguishing two possible causes: (i) the initial mass uniformity due to the usually employed sample preparation techniques (random deposition of monomers) and (ii) the screening effect due to the interference of neighboring clusters with a monomer diffusion gradient developing near each cluster. We show that the mass uniformity condition does not generate the observed degree of spatial order but that the screening effect is sufficient and therefore essential to describe the experimental data available in the literature.
