Abstract
Ce texte envisage le devenir de la noblesse canadienne après l’instauration du Régime anglais. Il retrace et explique les choix qui ont été faits par les différentes familles de partir ou de rester ; de se rallier ou de rester en marge du nouvel ordre qui s’est instauré dans les années 1770 et 1780. Il montre que les familles qui sont restées au Canada ont éprouvé, en définitive, le destin ordinaire des élites locales confrontées à l’installation d’un nouveau pouvoir colonial : les unes se sont avec succès rapprochées du pouvoir, afin de consolider leur domination politique et sociale, alors que les autres ont lentement glissé le long de l’échelle sociale et sont tombées dans l’obscurité.
