Abstract
Alors que les appareils statistiques de France, de Grande-Bretagne et des États-Unis ont fait l'objet d'études souvent très fouillées, Statistique Canada et ses prédécesseurs n'ont pas vraiment jusqu'ici retenu l'attention des spécialistes des sciences sociales. Et pourtant l'expérience canadienne en matière de collecte de données statistiques est loin de n'être qu'un décalque des expériences américaine et britannique (pour ne prendre que celles qui, a priori, pouvaient fortement l'influencer). Un ouvrage comme Pour une histoire de la statistique, véritable encyclopédie consacrée à la production de l'information statistique en France et dans quelques pays d'Europe, devrait, du fait des très riches analyses qu'il renferme, susciter tout particulièrement l'intérêt des politologues d'ici. Des thèmes comme celui du lien entre construction de l'État et développement des instruments d'enquête, ou comme celui des rapports entre administration statistique et recensés, appartiennent sans contexte au champ de la science politique.
