Chaque recensement quinquennal est suivi d'un nouvel exercice de perspectives démographiques, au cours duquel les hypothèses du scénario de référence sont généralement modifiées pour tenir compte des évolutions les plus récentes. Les dernières perspectives du Bureau de la statistique du Québec ne font pas exception à la règle. Les hypothèses de ce scénario ainsi que les résultats obtenus pour les régions administratives du Québec, à l'horizon 2016, sont ici analysés. La dichotomie Montréal / reste du Québec ressort plus que jamais, même si le déclin de la population totale n'affecte que quatre régions périphériques. Mais le critère de la population totale s'avère trompeur et d'autres critères plus judicieux montrent que le « déclin » touchera bientôt presque toutes les régions hors la grande région montréalaise. Il existe de plus une dynamique du déclin qui nous force à conclure que l'avenir de quelques régions périphériques paraît sombre.
