Abstract
Depuis quelques recensements, on considère avec circonspection les données sur les origines ethniques de la population canadienne. Les résultats de l'introduction en 1971 de la cueillette des réponses par autoénumération ont confirmé l'existence d'un important glissement des déclarations d'origine vers la catégorie « anglaise », à mesure que s'accomplit l'acculturation de diverses minorités. Parmi les conséquences méthodologiques de la mobilité ethnique, nous démontrons l'impossibilité de quantifier l'assimilation linguistique cumulative des minorités canadiennes-françaises à partir des données sur l'origine. Aussi, pour autant que mobilité ethnique et ascension socio-économique s'entremêlent, on risque de conclure à la pérennité de certaines stratifications sociales sur la foi d'observations systématiquement faussées par les transferts d'ethnie. Il convient donc de retrancher des recensements à venir la question traditionnelle sur l'origine, quitte à la remplacer par des concepts plus fidèlement objectivables.
