Ce texte est une analyse de la pertinence de la microfinance dans le processus de développement au Sénégal. Il examine dans une perspective socioéconomique les dimensions économiques, sociales et politiques qui sont mobilisées par les institutions de microfinance. Sous des formes institutionnelles différentes (projets à volet crédit, projets de crédits directs, mutuelles ou coopératives d’épargne et de crédit), celles-ci ont ciblé à l’origine les populations les plus pauvres. Les objectifs semblent avoir évolué et les approches se complexifient. À la lumière de tout ceci, notre analyse tente de mettre en exergue les points d’achoppement qui ralentissent la transition d’une microfinance comme mécanisme de financement des populations pauvres vers une microfinance comme dispositif pour le développement.
