Résumé Le développement de la capacité d’être triste peut être conçu comme un but thérapeutique, car une plus grande disponibilité de l’expérience de tristesse peut être bénéfique pour les patients. Or, certains vivent une forme de tristesse qualitativement distincte, conceptualisée comme une expérience de détresse. Le thérapeute peut utilement aider le patient triste à élaborer son expérience affective par l’interprétation des conflits psychiques, mais il doit par ailleurs aider le patient en détresse à contenir son expérience émotionnelle.
