Cet article s’inscrit dans une perspective sociologique. Il vise à montrer comment les médias francophones manitobains participent aux discours sur la défense du patrimoine de la communauté franco-manitobaine. Les concepts d’identité et de patrimonialisation nous serviront à comprendre l’émergence d’un discours plus militant en faveur de la protection du patrimoine faisant référence à l’histoire de la culture francophone dans l’Ouest canadien. Nous nous interrogerons plus particulièrement sur la façon dont ce discours est relayé par le journal La Liberté en prenant l’exemple de la controverse du « 500 Taché ». Le but est de mesurer le rôle des médias dans leur façon de mobiliser les ressources nécessaires à la mise en valeur de la communauté qu’ils desservent. Cela conduira à distinguer la spécificité des médias francophones en milieu minoritaire qui, selon nous, consiste autant à informer qu’à cultiver le sentiment d’appartenance à une collectivité.
