Abstract
Les avocats sont très présents dans la société québécoise, mais l'historiographie commence à peine à leur accorder un regard attentif. L'auteure a voulu contribuer à une meilleure compréhension de leur rôle et de leur place dans la société et l'élite montréalaise. Deux propositions principales se dégagent de ses analyses: une diversité d'intérêts dans les activités non juridiques des avocats favorise leur visibilité dans la société et leur permet de jouir d'un certain pouvoir ou d'une influence sur le pouvoir; les avocats forment un groupe socio-professionnel dont les membres, bien que n'appartenant pas à la même classe sociale, forment une élite qui participe au développement de la société montréalaise.
