Abstract
Entre 1800 et 1940, 661 prêtres et religieux quittèrent leur Bretagne natale pour le Canada, afin d’évangéliser les Indiens qu’ils appelaient alors « sauvages ». Leurs témoignages et leurs travaux, qui précèdent parfois la venue des premiers ethnologues, sont une source remarquable sur la vie et les coutumes des autochtones. De la simple peinture de moeurs teintée d’exotisme aux savantes études ethnologiques ou linguistiques, la collecte de matière indienne revêt des formes très diverses. La plupart de ces documents ont toutefois un point commun : celui d’avoir été rédigé dans une optique apologétique et missionnaire. Leur lecture et leur analyse permet ainsi de mieux connaître la culture des populations autochtones, mais aussi celle des missionnaires et de leurs lecteurs européens.
