Cette recherche analyse la dynamique spatiale des activités logistiques depuis le milieu des années 1980 jusqu’à présent, en s’appuyant sur des données sur les permis de construire dans 350 aires urbaines françaises. L’analyse de l’ensemble des aires urbaines d’un pays permet d’apporter un éclairage nouveau à la question de la périurbanisation, en s’interrogeant sur les différentes formes qu’elle a prises au cours du temps. Le travail démontre que, loin de se limiter au seul sommet de la hiérarchie urbaine, la périurbanisation des activités logistiques se produit également dans des aires urbaines de plus petite taille. Ce mouvement généralisé des activités logistiques vers le périurbain ne se fait pas de manière homogène mais en différentes vagues. Il s’est effectué dans un premier temps de manière dispersée pour ensuite se concentrer sur un petit nombre de pôles logistiques. Ces résultats confortent l’hypothèse, avancée par des travaux récents, selon laquelle les activités logistiques, poussées par les économies d’agglomération, auraient tendance à s’implanter à proximité d’autres activités logistiques.
