Abstract
Este trabajo vuelve a visitar la erección de la estatua de Cervantes en Madrid y 1835. Y, siguiendo las sugerencias de Rachel Schmidt y Joaquín Álvarez Barrientos, vincula esa estatua con el proceso –político y cultural– de monumentalización simbólica de Cervantes. Ese proceso, iniciado durante la fase tardía de la Ilustración, fomentado por Godoy y los afrancesados, se encarnaría, tras la Ominosa Década, en la crisis del reinado de Fernando VII y los primeros gobiernos «democráticos» bajo la regencia de María Cristina. Cervantes se convirtió así en símbolo cultural de la unidad nacional.
