The origin of potentials measured with a scanning electrochemical potential microscope is explained by the presence of leakage currents in the system. Electron tunneling is considered responsible for imaging surfaces like OH−-covered Cu(111), as shown by J. Kunze-Liebhäuser et al. on p. 77.
