Abstract
On trouvera ici une étude comparée de trois mots dans l’acception d’« alignement d’habitat », en langage administratif. La documentation est riche mais dispersée et inégale quant au nombre des occurrences. La synonymie exprime des niveaux relationnels entre une réalité, un concept et des entités lexicales. Seulement en langue courante et dans le domaine de l’habitat rural, rang possède onze significations, côte sept et concession cinq; or, une seule d’entre elles par mot se trouve en équation notionnelle. De telles distinctions sémantiques ayant rarement été faites, les cas de fausse synonymie se sont multipliés. Sous le Régime français, côte dominait mais sans être majoritaire. Vers le milieu du XIXe siècle, rang a triomphé presque totalement de côte, range et autres concurrents mineurs de même que partiellement de concession. Le degré de synonymie a varié régionalement. Cet article montre qu’il faut s’assurer du sens des entités, se garder de l’achronie, éviter de faire d’une région l’interlocutrice d’un territoire plus étendu et distinguer un terme métalinguistique des mots communs.
