À travers un choix d'ouvrages de quelques éminents représentants du comparatisme des littératures canadiennes, on peut circonscrire certains faits qui sont à l'origine de la fondation de cette discipline, retracer des jalons de son développement et discerner les pistes ouvertes à son évolution. La question qui se trouve au centre de la discussion interroge la nature et le statut de la littérature au Canada, son inévitable dimension politique, ainsi que les rapports présumés entre les corpus et les institutions littéraires de ce pays où des langues, des cultures et des traditions différentes coexistent et bénéficient d'une situation définie par un équilibre critique entre l'intégration d'un modèle national et la conservation des différences, qu'elles soient religieuses, régionales, culturelles ou linguistiques.
