Abstract
RÉSUMÉ Le Tho Mâu. un chamanisme vietnamien ? Le Tho A/au, ou « culte des Mères ». est pratiqué au nord et au centre du Viêt-nam, ainsi que dans la diaspora vietnamienne. C'est une forme de dévotion qui se caractérise principalement par des séances au cours desquelles des dames médiums ( bà dong) sont successivement possédées par les Saintes Mères du Ciel, des Monts et Forêts, des Eaux, et des Terres, ainsi que par d'autres « Génies des Quatre Palais ». Nous décrivons ici le panthéon et la pratique de ce culte, tels que nous les avons observés à Montréal, en soulignant ceux de ses éléments (la médiation entre les sexes par exemple) qui s'apparentent au chamanisme et qui pourraient historiquement procéder d'un chamanisme vietnamien préhistorique.
