Distribution Patterns of Three Long-Horned Beetles (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) Shortly After Fire in Boreal Forest: Adults Colonizing Stands Versus Progeny Emerging From Trees

We identified the factors that affect the early colonization of burned stands by adults and the progeny surviving in fire-killed black spruce trees for three cerambycid beetles: Acmaeops proteus proteus (Kirby), Acmaeops pratensis (Laicharting), and Monochamus scutellatus scutellatus (Say) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) in the northern Canadian boreal forest. Furthermore, we measured if progeny emerging from burned trees was related to patterns of adults captured in traps the same year as the fire. Fire severity at the stand and landscape scales were the most important predictors for colonizing adults. Except for A. pratensis, thick-barked and lightly burned trees positively influenced the occurrence of surviving progeny at the tree level. Last-instar larvae of A. pratensis emerged from burned trees more often in severely burned landscapes. This may result from biotic interactions with intraguild species or predators. With the exception of A. pratensis, variables affecting the postfire abundance and occurrence pattern of adults were strikingly different from progeny emerging after fire. Progeny emerging from burned trees was almost exclusively related to tree- or stand level characteristics, whereas colonizing adults were correlated with variables measured at various spatial scales, and most often at the landscape scale. Moreover, A. proteus proteus and M. scutellatus scutellatus adults were more common in severely burned landscapes, although their progeny emerged more often in lightly or moderately burned trees. Host selection behavior within stands (e.g., host acceptance) by colonizing adults or host suitability for the larvae might have caused this discrepancy. RÉSUMÉ Nous avons identifié les variables affectant la colonization initiale par les adultes de peuplements d’épinettes noires brûlés ainsi que la progéniture émergeant des arbres de ces peuplements pour trois espèces de longicorne, soit Acmaeops proteus proteus (Kirby), Acmaeops pratensis (Laicharting) et Monochamus scutellatus scutellatus (Say) (Coleoptera : Cerambycidae) dans le nord de la forêt boréale canadienne. Nous avons également évalué si la progéniture émergeant des arbres brûlés était reliée au patron d’abondance ou de présence des adultes capturés à l’aide de pièges au cours des deux premiers mois après feu. La sévérité du feu aux échelles du peuplement et du paysage constituait la variable la plus importante afin de prédire l’abondance/la présence des adultes colonisateurs. Sauf pour A. pratensis, la présence de la progéniture survivante était reliée négativement à la sévérité du feu à l’échelle de l’arbre, mais positivement à l’épaisseur de l’écorce. Les larves au dernier stade de A. pratensis étaient présentes plus fréquemment dans les paysages sévèrement brûlés, possiblement en raison d’interactions biotiques avec des espèces provenant de la même guilde ou encore avec des prédateurs. À l’exception de A. pratensis, le patron d’abondance ou de présence des adultes était très différent de celui des progénitures émergeant après le feu. En effet, les progénitures étaient presque exclusivement reliées à des caractéristiques mesurées à l’échelle de l’arbre ou du peuplement alors que les adultes étaient corrélés avec des variables mesurées à plusieurs échelles spatiales, le plus souvent à l’échelle du paysage. De plus, les adultes des espèces A. proteus proteus et M. scutellatus scutellatus étaient plus communs dans les paysages sévèrement brûlés alors que les progénitures émergeant ont été observées plus fréquemment dans les arbres faiblement ou modérément brûlés. Ces différences peuvent s’expliquer par le comportement de selection de l’hôte à l’intérieur des peuplements colonisés par les adultes ou par la convenance de l’hôte pour les larves.
