Abstract
L’article étudie la « construction » historique de l’invocation de la Vierge du Carmen au Chili, comme « patronne » des soldats vainqueurs de la guerre d’Indépendance et son identification ultérieure comme patronne de la Nation. Ce prolongement politique de sa protection est dû au lien idéologique établi précocement entre l’Armée et le nouvel État-nation en train de naître justement par les armes. Cependant, pour cette même raison, cette Vierge se maintint comme une représentation militaire qui l’empêcha de devenir une invocation collective et populaire au moment de la paix. De fait, les résurgences de sa dévotion au xixe siècle sont essentiellement liées à des épisodes belliqueux.
