Abstract
La identidad representativa de Venezuela se ha codificado en el mito del llanero y su canto celebratorio el Alma llanera. Considerado el segundo himno de la nacion, el Alma Llanera debe sus origenes al llamado genero chico de la zarzuela espanola. Tras un breve estudio comparativo entre la zarzuela espanola y la obra venezolana, resaltan los elementos del genero que han contribuido a la popularidad y consecuente asimilacion de la pieza homonima en el imaginario popular de Venezuela. Uno de los aspectos que mejor contrasta al caso venezolano del espanol es la expresion tragica y farsica de un final inesperado que rompe con las expectativas del genero chico, vislumbrandose asi una sutil critica de la sociedad venezolana de la epoca.
