L'article analyse les antécédents et les modalités du processus actuel de régionalisation au Nicaragua. Le Nicaragua est divisé en deux grands systèmes spatiaux: la côte atlantique et le centre-ouest. Dans le premier espace, les forces structurantes du système s'articulent, d'abord, autour de l'implantation des capitaux étrangers et de l'exploitation des ressources naturelles, ensuite autour des composantes ethnico-culturelles d'une population majoritairement indigène. Dans le second, la désintégration territoriale résulte de l'action d'autres facteurs socio-économiques, telles la formation et la croissance d'une bourgeoisie nationale importatrice et exportatrice et la prolétarisation d'une grande partie de la paysannerie et de la main-d'oeuvre urbaine. Le nouveau gouvernement s'attend à ce que la régionalisation apporte, entre autres, le développement d'une économie agro-industrielle, l'amélioration de l'infrastructure territoriale, la réduction du poids démographique relatif de Managua, la solution des difficultés de l'agriculture migratoire et la décentralisation des investissements; tout cela par le biais d'un effort collectif auquel participeraient le Front sandiniste, le Gouvernement de reconstruction nationale et, surtout, les ouvriers et les paysans.
