La phénoménologie est un courant philosophique, dont l’objectif est d’observer et de décrire le sens attribué à une expérience, à partir de la conscience qu’en a le sujet qui la vit. Appliquée à divers domaines, et notamment à celui du soin, elle étudie les phénomènes subjectifs tels que la souffrance, la qualité de vie. Elle constitue une véritable discipline, avec son épistémologie, ses données spécifiques (le récit de la personne), sa méthode d’analyse consistant à retrouver les unités de signification dans le discours, et une collaboration entre le chercheur et le participant (co-chercheur). La validité est définie par le fait de rendre intelligible le phénomène. Cette méthode, dans la représentation de la maladie et de la personne malade qu’elle implique, est proche de principes éthiques comme le respect de l’autonomie, l’optimisation de sa qualité de vie.
