Abstract
Dans le corpus de la littérature médiévale connue du public dans la première moitié du XIX e siècle, c’est l’épopée Renaut de Montauban ou Les quatre fils Aymon qui connaît la fortune la plus grande au théâtre. Transmise notamment par la Bibliothèque bleue, elle est devenue une légende vivante dans la mémoire collective. Transposée parfois très librement sur les scènes populaires, elle prête ses motifs héroïques et merveilleux au goût du spectaculaire, au prix d’une altération des textes initiaux : sollicitée pour traiter de la légitimité du pouvoir, de l’existence du mal, de la condition féminine ou de la décadence de l’aristocratie, la légende sert moins à faire connaître le Moyen Âge qu’à tendre aux contemporains un miroir du XIX e siècle.
