Abstract

Cet article présente les premiers résultats d’un projet de recherche destiné à mieux comprendre le phénomène de la main-d’œuvre salariée en milieu rural canadien au XVIII e siècle. Nous cherchons à en mesurer l’ampleur mais aussi à cerner les facteurs de formation et de renouvellement du groupe. Pour ce faire, nous suivons le cursus socioprofessionnel d’un échantillon de journaliers. À l’aide des actes d’état civil et de contrats notariés, nous tentons de déterminer le moment de l’engagement de ces individus, leurs caractéristiques sociales, les contours de leur famille d'origine et ceux de la famille qui les engagent. Le but est de mieux cerner ce qui motive les uns et les autres à recourir au travail salarié : lacune dans la force de travail familiale ou existences d’exploitations dont la taille dépasse la capacité de travail d’une famille paysanne moyenne ? Les résultats de l’enquête tendent à confirmer cette seconde explication.
