Sur le territoire Québécois, l'hydrologie opérationnelle se doit de fournir des prévisions fiables de la crue de printemps. Des modèles hydrologiques utilisant notamment des équivalents en eau de la neige au sol (EEN) observés comme condition initiale servent à cette fin. Ces modèles éprouvent toutefois des difficultés importantes pour simuler la partie finale de la crue de printemps. Une approche originale permettant de caler et d'alimenter les modèles hydrologiques avec des apports verticaux de fonte et de pluie, qui sont corrigés de façon continue à l'aide des EEN observés bi-mensuellement, est proposée. Cette approche, testée sur le bassin de la Rivière du Nord, permet d'améliorer la qualité de la simulation de la crue de printemps. Des erreurs importantes demeurent et mènent à la conclusion, qu'en partie du moins, les méthodes d'observation de la neige couramment utilisées au Québec peuvent être à la source du problème. Le texte est aussi traversé par l'idée qu'une autre partie de l'explication tient peut-être dans la présence difficilement prouvable d'un nouveau monstre des neiges.
