Abstract
Cet article montre, par l’analyse des motivations énoncées par des femmes et des hommes ayant eu recours à une stérilisation contraceptive en France et au Québec entre 1976 et 2006, que les prises de décision des acteurs dans le champ de la reproduction relèvent d’une conception normative de la famille : deux enfants, de préférence une fille et un garçon, pas trop éloignés en âge, et issus d’une même mère et du même père. Cet article souligne aussi les changements qui affectent la vie sexuelle des individus à partir du moment où le risque reproductif est maîtrisé – notamment le sentiment de liberté ressenti – et la manière dont cette pratique transforme les rapports de pouvoir dans le couple.
