Abstract
Le XVIIIe siècle a connu un tournant intellectuel important en Europe, qui a conduit à une nouvelle culture occidentale. L’image de la Chine a joué un rôle non négligeable pendant ce processus. Introduite tout d’abord par les missions en Chine, en particulier celles des Jésuites, la Chine était une référence courante chez les philosophes des Lumières, qui avaient pour but de reconstruire l’Europe. Bien que l’image de la Chine soit déformée chez toutes les écoles philosophiques, des Jésuites au romantisme, la philosophie chinoise a été appréciée par les défenseurs du despotisme éclairé et critiquée par ses détracteurs. Après avoir contribué à la reconstruction du monde occidental, la Chine a commencé à étudier l'Occident en envisageant son relèvement.
