Abstract
Cet article vise à rapprocher le regard européen que Perec et Bober posent sur l’un des symboles de la nation américaine – Ellis Island – et le médium de l’album qui propose un « voyage » entre texte et photographies. À cheval sur deux plans temporels – historique et contemporain –, le texte oscille entre le marquage de l’énonciation présente et l’effacement de celle-ci, tandis que les photographies font alterner les photographies de Lewis Hine et celles de Perec et Bober qui photographient « ce qui reste » du centre d’immigration. Ce faisant, Perec se demande comment témoigner du passé. C’est précisément dans l’espace intermittent du livre d’images, dans le passage du noir et blanc à la couleur, dans le dialogue entre photographies et texte et dans la nécessité même de « tourner la page » qu’il parvient à faire apparaître le lieu insaisissable du passage du temps et de la disparition du passé.
