L'histoire des écosystèmes fluviaux du Rhône français au cours des derniers siècles peut se résumer en trois phases principales. Au cours de celles-ci, les impacts anthropiques, directs et indirects, sont allés croissants. En l’espace d’un siècle environ, le cours d’eau est passé d’un style géomorphologique tressé à une succession de biefs aménagés. Une revue bibliographique de la composition actuelle, des changements survenus et du potentiel de restauration des communautés animales et végétales de la plaine alluviale du Rhône français a récemment été établie. Elle a permis de recenser près de 3800 espèces animales et végétales : 1039 invertébrés, 312 vertébrés, 395 algues, 2050 plantes supérieures. Les descripteurs biologiques montrent une diminution de la diversité biologique avec la baisse de la diversité morphologique et de la connectivité de l’hydrosystème régulé à la suite des interventions anthropiques qui se sont succédées. Si la place accordée à la nature dans le fonctionnement socio-économique de la vallée du Rhône s’accroit progressivement, l'avenir des milieux naturels rhodaniens demeure encore incertain. Toutefois, quelques outils réglementaires récents, principalement sur l’initiative de l’Etat et des associations, laissent espérer une évolution physique et écologique positive du fleuve. Une politique de protection et de restauration des milieux se met ainsi progressivement en place.
