Abstract
Le « processus de civilisation » a longtemps été envisagé comme une captation monopolistique de la violence physique par l’État. Mais cette évolution historique n’a pas été étudiée dans ses modalités concrètes sous l’angle de la police, entendue comme une pratique régulatrice des désordres et comme une forme de contrôle social. C’est l’objet du renouvellement des études historiques sur la police. La civilisation a-t-elle touché les agents de la police sur le terrain au point d’orienter leurs pratiques et de policer la police ? Ces derniers utilisent la violence, qui fait partie intégrante de leur mode opératoire, au point de susciter des réactions hostiles dans la population, allant à l’encontre de l’image élaborée par les élites d’un peuple sage et pacifié.
